Tucked away in the mountainous embrace of the Mackenzie High Country, Mackenzie Pass Retreat by Tiny Away offered us the quiet we didn’t know we needed. The tiny house sits on a majestic piece of land that’s been in the same family for three generations: true Kiwi farmers who welcomed us warmly and shared stories about life on their land. Their pride in the property was clear, and it made us feel like part of something much larger than just a night’s stay.
As the sun dipped behind the hills, we fell asleep to the sounds of native birds fluttering in the trees and stars blinking into view one by one. The kind of night sky that makes you forget about phone screens altogether. In the morning, we found a generous breakfast ready for us, fresh eggs, crispy bacon, flaky croissants, and rich coffee that hit the spot perfectly. It was just one night, but it gave us what we didn’t realize we were craving—a proper pause. A moment to slow down, to take in the vast land around us, and to enjoy each other’s company with no rush and no noise.
